Mapleton 24th of July Pioneer Day Celebration 2015

From the early-morning wake up sirens at 6 am, to the last firework well after dark, Mapleton’s 24th of July Pioneer Day celebration is a favorite of the entire community. It’s a hometown celebration that brings out most of the town, and that brings people back to Mapleton even when they no longer live here. And Mapleton’s 2015 24th of July Pioneer Day Celebration was no exception.

The day’s events began at 6:30 am, with a Patriotic Ceremony at Mapleton City Park. There the flag was raised, “My Country Tis of Thee” was sung, and the audience learned more about our National Anthem.

A few minutes later, and a few blocks north, a crowd of Mapleton youngsters took off for the 1-mile Fun Run. Then an even larger crowd – the largest ever, in fact – ran Mapleton’s traditional 5K run.

Meanwhile, breakfast was being served over at the park, food was being prepared, games were being set up, and the crowd was gathering for the Grand Parade, which began at 9 am. From Mapleton Junior High in the north end of town, to Mapleton Elementary, community members marched along the parade route, smiling, waving, throwing candy, and sometimes even squirting streams of water into the crowd.

The parade began, as always, with the American flag, followed by police, fire trucks, and ambulances. The Maple Mountain High School Marching Band provided music, and Mayor Brian Wall and city council members went by in golf carts, waving to the crowd. Maple Mountain High School cheerleaders fired up the crowd; Honorary Grand Marshall Dick Bills and Grand Marshalls Joyce and Arnold Wilson then went by, followed by many members of the Wilson family. There were horses and wagons; local businesses; members of local LDS Stake Presidencies; LDS missionaries; and, of course, the traditional LDS Primary childrens’ floats.

As the parade ended, the crowd dispersed, with many wandering over to the Mapleton City Park for food, games, socializing, and fun.

All in all, it was a perfect day for a hometown celebration.

Festivities continue tonight at Ira Allen Park, with skydivers; helicopter ping pong drop; entertainment; and fireworks.
