Mapleton Police Press Release: Fatal Accident

On Monday, May 22, 2017 at 7:31 PM, Mapleton Public Safety Departments responded to an accident which occurred at the intersection of 1600 and North Main Street. It was found that a 17-year-old male traveling west on 1600 North failed to stop at the stop sign, hitting an SUV that was traveling south on Main Street. The impact caused the SUV to roll, ejecting an 18-year-old female passenger. The victim was transported by Mapleton EMS to Utah Valley Hospital, however she succumbed to her injuries during the night.

The Mazda was occupied by the 17-year-old driver and two other male juveniles. The SUV was occupied by three adult females, including the 18-year-old victim. All other occupants were either treated on scene or have been released from the hospital with non-life threatening injures.

The 18-year-old female has been identified as Kathrynn Shaw of Spanish Fork. Kathrynn was a senior at Maple Mountain High School and was set to graduate with her class this week. Nebo School District and Maple Mountain High School are working with counselors to help the student body deal with this tragedy. The Mapleton Police Department is still investigating the circumstances of the accident and has not yet screened the case for potential charges.
